The Astronotus ocellatus, commonly known as the Oscar fish, is a species that thrives in a diverse array of freshwater environments. It is predominantly found in the slow-moving waters of the Amazon Basin, where its natural habitat is characterized by warm, slightly acidic to neutral water. This environment is rich in dense vegetation, which serves as both hiding spots and hunting grounds for the Oscar. The substrate in these areas is often a soft bed of mud, sand, or decomposed organic material, conducive to the growth of microorganisms that form a part of the Oscar's diet. Overhanging branches and fallen leaves from surrounding forest trees further enrich the habitat, creating a complex ecosystem where these adaptable fish can flourish amidst shelter and abundant food sources.

When setting up an aquarium for the Oscar fish, creating an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat is essential. Given their large size and active nature, experts recommend a minimum tank size of 450 litres. A combination of fine sand and small, smooth pebbles is ideal for substrate, as it mimics their natural environment and promotes healthy behaviour.

The aquarium decorations should include larger rocks, driftwood, and hardy plants that can withstand the Oscar fish's robust activities. These decorations offer them hiding spots and territorial landmarks vital for their well-being. Lighting should be moderate, simulating the subdued light of their native, densely vegetated waters, as this helps reduce stress levels.

The natural diet of the Oscar fish is remarkably varied, encompassing insects, small fish, crustaceans, snails and occasionally plant matter found in their native Amazonian habitats. To replicate this diverse diet in a home aquarium, it's essential to provide a balanced mix of high-quality commercial pellets or sticks designed for large carnivorous fish supplemented with live or frozen foods such as shrimp, bloodworms, and crickets. This ensures a high level of nutrition and caters to the Oscar's predatory instincts and dietary preferences, promoting vibrant health and longevity. Care should be taken to avoid overfeeding and to ensure all food items are appropriately sized to prevent choking hazards, maintaining the well-being of these captivating aquatic pets.

Breeding Astronotus ocellatus, or Oscars, in the home aquarium presents a challenge due to their particular needs and behaviours. A spacious tank, no less than 450 litres, is crucial to accommodate a breeding pair comfortably, providing enough territory to reduce stress and aggression. Additionally, a female can lay up to 2000 eggs per spawn, so some planning should be taken to ensure adequate aquarium space to raise the fry safely. Water quality must be meticulously maintained with parameters closely mirroring their natural habitat—warm temperatures around 25-27°c, soft to slightly hard, and a neutral pH. Creating an environment that mimics their natural breeding grounds involves adding flat rocks or smooth surfaces for the female to lay eggs. Oscars are known for their parental care. Both parents typically guard and tend to their eggs and fry diligently. Observing these intricate parental behaviours in a controlled environment can be highly rewarding, yet requires patience and attention to detail to ensure the health and safety of both the adult fish and their offspring.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at [email protected] or to our Facebook page, and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish. 

Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels) via a dated image. Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to [email protected] or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or "disasters", i.e. a heater overheating. To prevent such situations, we recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium.
