Feeding Tips
Remember that good quality hay and/or grass should make up the majority of your chinchillas’ diet and should be available at all times.
Chinchillas should also be fed a small amount of leafy greens each day. Please talk to your vet for further information.
If you are currently feeding a muesli style food to your chinchillas you should gradually transfer your pets onto a hay and nugget based feeding plan over a period of between 14 and 28 days, by gradually reducing the amount of muesli and increasing the proportion of nuggets until they have completely replaced the mix.
Always ensure you are monitoring your chinchillas’ weight to ensure a healthy weight. Always ensure fresh clean water is available for your chinchillas.

The Excel Feeding Plan
Sticking to The Excel Feeding Plan will ensure your chinchilla get the right amounts of fibre in their diet. The Excel Feeding Plan was developed by the world's leading small-animal vets, to provide a perfect daily balance of fibre and nutrition.
The Excel Feeding Plan is a simple five step guide to help pet owners understand the high levels of beneficial fibre required by chinchillas. It is the only complementary range that, when used together, delivers extremely high levels of the right kinds of fibre needed in chinchillas’ diets and effectively promotes and maintains the dental, digestive and emotional health and longevity of these pets.
These premium quality Timothy Hay should form the majority of your chinchillas’ diet. They are especially good for dental health as the gnawing action required to eat them helps to wear down teeth. Timothy hay also play a vital role in digestive and emotional health as they provide the bulk of the diets’ indigestible fibre and encourage foraging.
Burgess Excel Chinchilla Nuggets is a great complementary feed that can be fed as part of the Excel Feeding Plan and alongside any of the Burgess Excel Feeding Hay range. We recommend that you feed the nuggets in small amounts in line with the feeding guide on pack in heavy bottomed ceramic dish (or one attached to the cage so it can't be tipped over).
Burgess Excel Mountain Meadow Herbs and Country Garden Herbs can be sprinkled through feeding hay to add interest and encourage foraging. These delicious, natural and healthy snacks are ideal for chinchillas as they promote emotional health, by preventing boredom.
Some dark, dried leafy greens can be fed to chinchillas, however it is important to be very cautious about introducing these as many chinchillas don't tolerate them. If you do introduce them do so in only very small amounts. Please seek advice from your vet before introducing any fresh greens into your chinchillas' diets.
A plentiful supply of fresh water should always be available. Change it daily in warm weather and ensure it hasn't frozen over during winter months.
