We like plants that combine consistent unique beauty with low-maintenance. This is another North American nativar that combines those qualities. Zesty Zinger forms a compact rounded mound come midsummer and is covered in 1½ inch dark magenta and white colored flowers. The flowers are quite stunning as a close look reveals that perhaps they were once white, but each petal was hit by a magenta brush stroke before unfurling. Zesty Zinger is 20”-24” wide and 15”-18” tall at maturity making them a good choice for the front or middle of a garden bed.
Zesty Zinger is part of the Sizzle and Spice series of coreopsis. Members of this collection have compact, rounded habits that are covered with bright colorful flowers from early to late summer.
Coreopsis or tickseed is an excellent plant for any garden because it is easy to grow and also packs a big punch. This little native is great for those looking to bring more native plants back to the yard, but it is as beautiful as anything else you’ll find. Starting in late spring/early summer the small flowers on Coreopsis start coming and then they keep coming and coming and coming in large flushes until the end of the growing season with no need for deadheading.
Tickseed makes a great cut flowers and the long lasting blooms will keep your garden looking great through much of the year. Native to North America, when it comes to disease resistance and ease of care coreopsis is hard to beat. Grow in full sun and soil that drains in the winter months.
