Corydoras adolfoi, or Adolfo’s Cory, is a captivating tropical freshwater fish species highly sought after by aquarists worldwide.
These charming little catfish originate from the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, a blackwater habitat with acidic pH, low mineral content, and high concentrations of dissolved humic substances. Here, the water is typically clear but deeply stained with tannins from decaying organic material, resembling tea.
Adolfo's Cory is a small catfish with elegant colouration, featuring a black stripe with a striking orange or reddish crown on its head. This unique colour scheme provides excellent camouflage against the dark substrate and fallen leaves in their natural habitat, protecting them from predators.
Like other Corydoras, the Adolfoi are a peaceful, social fish known for their playful, bottom-dwelling behaviour. They have a unique swimming pattern, often darting up to the water's surface to gulp air, a trait inherited from their adaptation to low-oxygen environments and not to be mistaken for a fish struggling for air. Their feeding behaviour is equally fascinating. They use their sensitive barbels to rummage through the substrate to find food particles.
In captivity, Corydoras adolfoi will readily accept a variety of foods. A diet of high-quality sinking pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, will keep them healthy and active.
The aquarium setup should include a soft, sandy substrate to mimic their natural environment to protect their delicate barbels. Driftwood, leaf litter, and plants can be added to provide hiding spots and mimic the tannin-stained waters they are familiar with.
Breeding Corydoras Adolfoi can be a rewarding experience. They are egg layers and prefer to deposit their eggs on flat surfaces, often aquarium glass or plant leaves. To encourage breeding, increase the frequency of water changes and lower the water temperature slightly, mimicking the conditions of their natural rainy season. Once the eggs are laid, they should be moved to a separate tank to prevent them from being eaten.
All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.
