The Electric Blue Ram Cichlid is a man-made variant of the German Blue Ram which is found in Venezuela. They are dwarf cichlids and are cichlids in every sense however, unlike their larger cousins, they lack the aggression often associated with Cichlids which makes them a great species for smaller aquariums with a variety of fish.
The natural habitat consists of a soft sandy substrate and lots of aquatic stem plants. In the home aquarium, it is advised we provide the same to allow these gorgeous little cichlids to sift through the substrate in search of food. An omnivore diet can be provided in the form of live and frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp. Additionally, dry foods in flake, pellet and granule form can be offered.
The colour of the Electric Blue Ram has come about by clever selective breeding and although not a natural variant as such, no artificial treatments have been performed. The vivid blue colouring can be found in wild species too.
Breeding your Electric Blue Ram Cichlid is much the same as other dwarf Cichlid species. Once a pair is formed, they will prepare a solid surface for laying eggs onto. A rock or piece of wood is ideal. Both parents care for the eggs and fry which can prove to be challenging if housed in an aquarium with other fish. A dedicated breeding tank is the best option.
All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.
