The SAE thrives in flowing streams and tributaries where boulders, pebbles, gravel, and sand provide ample substrate. Areas with submerged driftwood or tree roots that act as a natural shelter for these fish are preferred. The clear, often shallow, water invites sunlight to penetrate the surface, developing a rich biofilm on submerged surfaces. The Siamese Algae Eater feeds on this biofilm, making this fish an essential addition for those looking to maintain a natural and balanced aquarium environment.
This species prefers tanks that resemble a flowing river or stream with a substrate of rocks, gravel, and large water-worn boulders. A network of roots and branches can be added to provide nooks, crannies, and shaded spots. While most plant species won't thrive, hardy types like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias can be grown, and bright lighting will promote algae growth for grazing. This environment promotes natural behaviour and allows cohabitation with species that enjoy similar conditions.
Like many fishes that naturally inhabit running waters, this species requires pristine water to thrive. A high dissolved oxygen and water movement level is also necessary, so external filters, powerheads, or similar should be employed.
The Flying Fox requires quality food by adding Spirulina or a similar dried product. But remember to include plenty of fresh vegetable matter in their diet. Shelled peas, blanched courgette, and spinach should also be offered regularly.
All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.
