Marimo is a Japanese word which loosely translates to “seaweed ball". However, you may be surprised to learn these are cute moss balls are actually solid balls of algae, not moss. They grow extremely slowly, about 0.5-1cm per year. But in their natural habitats in the northern hemisphere in countires such as Japan, Scotland, and Australia, they can grow up to a massive 15-20cm thick!
Another reason to love Marimo moss balls is beautiful legend that surround these moss ball pets. Legend has it that there were once two lovers who desired nothing more than to be together in their hometown of Kyoto. When their love was forbidden, they ran away away but tragically fell into Lake Akan, sinking to the bottom. According to the myth, their hearts turned into Marimo balls and thats why it is a symbol of love and affection today.

Marimo Moss Ball Care
Marimo Moss Balls are incredibly easy to care for because they require very little to live. These pet moss balls like indirect sunlight, cool waters and low light environments. Regular water changes (once every 1-2 weeks) are great to freshen the water and provide new oxgyenation to the moss balls. If your marimo moss balls start to turn brown, move the tank or enclosure to a cooler spot with less light for it to recover.
