What's in coconut water that boosts growth?
There's no magic formula or secret recipe here. Coconut water has been extensively studied and is widely used in horticulture for everything from tissue culture to ornamental indoor plants such as orchids, as well as crops such as tomatoes.
Coconut water is a proven growth stimulant, full of naturally occurring enzymes and plant growth hormones that speed up growth, while also improving soil quality, making it more fertile. Enzymes also condition the soil and help break down toxic pollutants, such as heavy metals from tap water, into safe, usable nutrients for plants.
As well as being high in beneficial enzymes, coconut water is also rich in protective b-vitamins, along with beneficial plant sugars, essential macro-minerals and trace minerals including calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium and zinc. No, it's not a fertiliser, but does also provides the benefit of helping plants better uptake minerals from fertiliser.
How is Seacliff Organics Horticultural Coconut different?
You're right. Seacliff is not the only coconut water powder on the market, however what makes it different is Seacliff Organics is 100% pure with no additives. It's spray-dried which makes it more water-soluble and can be stored normally (no refrigeration required). It's more concentrated so you'll use less and it costs you less. Spray-drying is also a more cost-effective production method, with Seacliff Horticultural Coconut working out as 23 cents per litre based on the soil dilution rate or 12 cents per litre based on the foliar spray rate*
Directions for use
SOIL DRENCH
Dissolve 1 teaspoon into a little warm water first. Mix then add to 5 litres of water. Apply as a soil drench, every second water.
When using every time you water (the 'weakly weekly' method), dissolve 1/4 teaspoon into a little warm water first. Mix then add to 2 litres of water.
Best made up as needed and used fresh.
FOLIAR SPRAY
Dissolve a 1/2 teaspoon into a little warm water first. Mix then add to 5 litres of water. Apply as a foliar spray with a spray mister or watering can. Apply monthly (however gentle enough to use more often).
For smaller water quantities, dissolve 1/4 teaspoon into a little warm water first. Mix then add to 2 litres of water.
Best used up within one week of diluting. Once diluted, store covered / sealed and out of direct sunlight.
PROPAGATION
Dissolve a 1/2 teaspoon into a little warm water first. Mix then add to 2 litres of water. Soak cutting, seed or seedling in diluted solution for 30 to 60 minutes max before potting up.
Best made up as needed and used fresh. Discard solution after soaking.
Note for propagation: Although beneficial, coconut water is not as often used in organic horticulture for cuttings and seedlings, however Aloe Vera Powder is highly recommended for superior results for cuttings, seedlings and young vegetative growth.
Storage and safety
Best store sealed, somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight or in the fridge. Use dry tools only. Wearing a mask is recommended when handling to avoid breathing in the fine powder particles.
*Costs and litres per pack based on standard measurement of 1 teaspoon = 4 grams
