The Sunset Gourami is one of several colour strains of the Dwarf Gourami that has become popular in the home aquarium. One look at these fish and you can see why they carry the name Sunset. With a rich rusty orange body and fins so blue you would be forgiven for thinking they belong in the reef tank. Although this strain does not exist naturally, it is produced by selective breeding and not by hybridisation.
While we regard these fish as community safe, we must acknowledge their tendency to be territorial. Adequate space and hiding places must be provided to encourage a peaceful environment. It is also wise to avoid housing two males together in a smaller aquarium. Like other species from this family, it is common for them to target other long-finned fish like Betta. We recommend keeping a single male or a breeding pair in aquariums 60l+ with lots of plants to provide the best environment. When keeping a pair, you can observe them swimming together in harmony.
Requiring little in the way of water flow, if you feel creative, you can set up some very interesting displays with lots of wood and large plants. This will provide the ideal environment for breeding. The reduced water movement allows for the bubble nest to be created for eggs to remain until the fry are free-swimming. For the best chance of success, we recommend reducing the water level in your aquarium to create a space above the water and below the hood. This is vital for fry to develop the labyrinth organ for which is used for breathing air above the surface of the water.
The Sunset Gourami is quite possibly the most colourful gourami and guaranteed to brighten up any aquarium.
