LEDLights.io
LED Lighting has been leading the lighting industry for a long time now and is finally beginning to
get more consumer attention as prices are becoming more affordable and the payback period
on energy savings is becoming shorter and shorter. As of 2015 energy-wasteful lights such as the
incandescent lamp including the EU-27, are completely phased out in Canada, US and Russia,
making LED Lighting not just preferred but necessary. While the CFL’s have been more popular
among consumers, LEDs can now double the energy savings; LEDs have no mercury or lead, and
offer more control and options no other type of lighting can match. Depending on where you
live, there are likely various government incentives or rebates to help ease in the switch to LED
Lighting for you home and business.
LED Lighting is truly the only green and sustainable option for lighting and it is our mission at
LEDLights.io to make them as affordable and accessible to consumers around the globe to
appreciate the lasting benefits. Because of its amazing abilities compared to more traditional
style lighting, LED Lighting can be found already long used to illuminate architectural landmarks
and famous buildings around the world. LED Lighting is also superior in its full colour options,
which are heavily used, in global concerts, theatres, casinos, restaurants and large public spaces.
Recently there has also been huge developments in outdoor LED Lighting to save energy
consumption on roads, airport runway lighting, arena and sports lighting, landscape lighting and
large signage.
What exactly are LEDs and what makes them so great you ask?
First, LED stands for light-emitting diodes. LEDs are semiconductor devices that create light
when an electrical current passes through them. LEDs, like OLEDs and LEPs are a type of Solid
State Lighting (SSL). LEDs are much smaller than traditional lighting and because of this are able
to offer unique design opportunities. What helps to make LEDs energy efficient is its directional
light sources. LEDs emit light in a specified direction, whereas compact fluorescent and
incandescent bulbs emit heat and light in all directions.
LEDs are able to have a much longer lifespan because they never burn out like traditional bulbs,
rather they experience depreciation in brightness, or lumens, overtime. Because of this LEDs
lifetime can go until the light output reaches 30%, opposed to the 50% mark when other lamps
burn out. LED products contain a variety of heat sink designs that help to manage heat
temperatures so they don’t radiate nearly as much heat as incandescent and halogen bulbs. The
heat sink absorbs the heat and dissipates it throughout the environment. Now that the price of
LEDs is becoming more affordable it’s important to know what makes them worth that bit of
extra upfront cost.
Benefits of LED Lighting
1. Long Lasting – LED lights last 10x longer compared to compact fluorescents and even
longer when compared to incandescent lights.
2. Durable – LED lights are solid, and do not have a filament, making them able to hold up
well to bumping and jarring.
3. Cool – LEDs do not cause any heat build-up as they produce 3.4btu’s/hour, while
incandescent lights produce 85. This can result in lower air conditioning costs in homes
and businesses with lots of lighting.
4. Mercury Free – There is absolutely no mercury in LEDs
5. More Efficient – LEDs use anywhere from 2-17 watts of electricity, roughly 1/3 to 1/30
the amount used in CFL and incandescent lights.
6. Cost-Effective – While the initial cost is more compared to other lighting, the cost
savings will come over the long lifetime of the LEDs, the savings in hydro, and the
reduced replacement and maintenance costs. Over the past few years the initial cost of
LEDs has been coming down due to new developments in the manufacturing of LEDs as
more and more people adopt them as their lighting of choice.
7. Portable Generators and Remote Area Lighting – LEDs are able to use solar panels
because of the low power requirements. LEDs can also be used for small portable
generators, used by homeowners as backup power emergencies.
As more and more people begin to learn about the benefits of LEDs and adopt them as their
lighting of choice, the breakthroughs in manufacturing LED lights continues to improve itself
making them cheaper and more efficient. One of these major breakthroughs in manufacturing is
the clustering of small LED bulbs; to be used in battery powered products including headlamps
and flashlights. Now LEDs are able to use 180 bulbs per cluster and can spread light in wider
beams by being encased in diffuser lenses. LED manufacturing has also developed many
standard base types so they can fit common household lighting fixtures.
Another special feature of LEDs is the directional lighting. Incandescent lights spread light
spherically. Directional lighting is perfect for use of under-cabinet lighting or recessed lighting. In
uses where a more overall illumination is desired, such as table lamps, LEDs use diffuser lenses
and reflectors to diffuse light similar to an incandescent bulb. As mentioned more and more
developments in LED manufacturing to decrease the costs of LEDs in order to bring them to the
household market are happening all of the time. An example of this is the use of inexpensive
silicon wafers opposed to expensive sapphire-based technology. As manufacturing continues to
improve LEDs are finding tons of uses, from big warehouses, businesses, offices, homes, outdoor
lighting, street lighting and underwater and pool lighting.
LED Lighting In Offices
LED lighting in your office can not only save your business hundreds of dollars in electricity costs
but also offer adaptability and flexibility. This will help to make employees feel more
comfortable and stimulate performance as well as saving money. LED lighting brings awareness
to inefficiencies in lighting, as most traditional bulbs give uniform illumination throughout the
workspace, LEDs create more balanced, and adaptive lighting to each specific location and
functions. Example reflections on computers can become tiring on the eyes, leading to lower
concentration and efficiency if not corrected. Using high quality LEDs in your office can provide
50% energy saving. Private and public sector buildings account for 60% of all lighting used
around the world and most use older inefficient lighintg. New imaginative investment models
can be made to make the switch over to LEDs, where costs will be made back in energy savigns
down the line.
LED Lighting In Hospitality
Hotel and restaurant lighting is in use 24/7 and therefore needs to person efficiently and
effectively as well as create the desired ambiance and feeling to make customers feel welcomed
and comfortable. LED lights can create many different palette of moods with colour changing
LED light strips, custom dimmers and different lighting temperatures to fit any desired
atmosphere. All this and LED provide the lowest operating cost and minimal maintenance.
LED Lighting For Outdoor Spaces
More than simply providing light throughout the darker hours of the night, many cities are
outdoor spaces are looking to create new identities and safe liveable communities for their
residents to be proud of. LEDs provide incomparable illumination of urban spaces in a
breathtaking and practical manner. LEDs are able to adapt unlike traditional static lighting, LEDs
can change according to the seasons and the weather, provide joyful colour options, and all of
this while creating huge savings on energy consumption.
LED Lighting In Retail
Shopping malls today are so much more than stores but try to create an experience for its
shoppers. LED lighting can provide amazing accent lighting to highlight products and features
and unique colours and designs to entice certain ambiances and moods.
The Importance of Energy Efficient Lighting
19% off all electricity is used for lighting. 2/3 of all lighting used is energy inefficient and this
needs to be changed yesterday! During the past decade there has been a revolution in lighting,
providing savings up to 80% and more quality light making people feel better and be more
productive. If the world switched it would save $134 billion in energy costs and 630 million
tones of CO2 Reasons to switch include saving money, reducing carbon emissions, reducing the
load on power stations and reducing investment in new ones, demonstrating leadership inbeing
green. These technologies exist today, but because many aren’t educated in the benefits of LED
lighting they do not see the reasoning behind spending more in the upfront costs. By choosing
the cheaper initial purchase, you are actually buying the most expensive solution, and also
placing a burden on our energy infrastructure. How can we speed up the switch to LED Lighting?
Many governments are phasing out the production and therefor use of incandescent bulbs,
which is a great start. Providing more refunds and benefits to those who make the switch by
governments will also be great incentives for those finding the initial investments tough.
At LEDLights.io we see the challenge in this change and are fighting for consumers by always
searching for the best quality and price in all types of LED Lighting so that making the switch can
be as effortless and easy on your wallet as possible. Should you have any additional questions or
