An award winning, family run business located in the center of Enniscorthy town, at the foothill of the very famous Vinegar Hill, and directly positioned along the pathway of Ireland's Ancient East, where visitors come to view the historical "Pugins Cathedral" and the Norman Castle.
Steeped in history where the Battle of Vnegar Hill took place in 1798, it is said that the rebels had held a meeting in the upstairs front room of the original house back then, this room is now home to the "Cookshop" where we hold sugarcraft classes for adults and children on an ongoing basis.
Our shop started out as a small 1,000sq ft store with the main entrance from Rafter Street named after Séamus Rafter , who famously launched the Gaelic League in Enniscorthy, and fought in the 1916 Rising.
The shop grew incrementally over the years and it is now some 16,000sq ft stretching back to the Lymington Road car-park and adjoins Weafer Street on the other side.
Jack & Anna Kavanagh purchased the property from the Smyth family in 1979 and it was then known as "Peter Smyths". Whilst our name has changed down through the years, it is still known by many as " Peter Smyths" and that name is still proudly displayed on the Rafter Street entrance, in keeping with the traditional facade of the store.
The store was run by Jack & Anna with the help of their eight children for the next 20 years, and in 1990, their son Dermot and his wife Betty took over the shop and are running it to this day.The shop saw an expansion of 5000sq ft in 2018.
