Our Story

BEDI was established in 2019 by Inder Bedi. The ethos is to design utilitarian pieces with the onus of cleaning up and preserving our planet to fulfill our brand promise: One day, everything new will come from something old.

Our material sources include upcycled seat belts, recycled airline seats, salvaged furniture, and ECONYL®, an incredibly advanced and sustainable fabric from Italy made from regenerated fishnets. A full range of our elegant outerwear, bags and knits can be found at our flagship store in the Mile End district of Montreal, as well as select retailers such as HOLT RENFREW.

Highly sustainable materials and Canadian craftsmanship have resulted in a collection of utilitarian designs with impeccable detailing. The styles reflect a Japandi approach to design: grounded in elevated utility while contributing to the circular economy. Designed and made to last for LIFE.

Inder Bedi named a  Climate Champion by the United Nations

Inder has spent his career working towards sustainable fashion. In 2021 he was named as a Climate Champion by the United Nations through its COP 26 Initiative.

Founder Message

The launch of BEDI Studios represents the next chapter in my journey to find an equilibrium in design coupled with positive impact. This path is the culmination of my last 20 years in this industry, where I launched a vegan leather accessories company, based on a university paper for a class I never wanted to take. That company would develop into MATT & NAT and become the starting point in my journey exploring the crossroads of fashion and sustainability.

In 2013 I left the fashion industry to reset and contemplate the impact design was having on climate change and our planet as a whole. Inspired by Dieter Rams Ten Principles of Design, in 2016 I began researching alternatives to virgin materials, looking at landfill materials and ocean pollution as a source of inspiration.

The first collection in 2019 was a limited run of duffle bags and backpacks made from retired Air Canada seats and upcycled seat belts from local scrapyards. I’m blessed every day to work with an incredible team of game changers— together we have created one of the most advanced sustainable offerings in the world. Through our studios in the Mile End we get to interact with our community everyday to learn and push further. It truly takes a village. Thank you for joining and supporting our community.
