Short Story- How Easter Bunny had the best Easter ever!
Read it with your children and grandchildren
“I’m sorry Bunny, I know you were looking forward to the ginger and cinnamon cookies and the Easter egg hunt. But you know your sister Lilly is not feeling too well and we’ve just moved into this new burrow. Mummy and Daddy haven’t had any time to prepare for Easter.” explained his Mum as she gave him a big squishy cuddle.
It was the night before Easter and Bunny rabbit was tossing and turning in his bed but just couldn’t fall asleep. He stared out of his window at the full moon. “Oh look, the moon looks like a big cookie” he thought licking his lips. Suddenly, he had an idea! He knew what would make Lilly feel better. He was very excited but tired too and fell asleep while hatching his exciting plan.
The next morning, Daddy rabbit was surprised to see Bunny awake in the morning. Before he could ask Bunny what he was up to, Bunny had hopped into the nearby garden. He was busy looking for something.
A few minutes later, he hopped back into the house with a basket full of turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom, ginger, honey and some lavender flowers. “What have you got there?” asked Daddy curiously. But all Bunny said was “busy Daddy… I’m going to make Lilly feel better”. “Fine” said Daddy and he went back to read his newspaper.
In the kitchen, Bunny got down to work. He brought out a big saucepan, poured some milk in it and put it on the stove. He carefully lit the fire under it like Mummy rabbit had shown him. Then he crushed some turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom, honey and put it in the milk. He stirred it with a big spoon and once he thought it was ready, he poured the moon milk into Lilly’s favourite cup with a ladle. He looked at the cup and proudly smiled thinking ‘Granny showed me how to make this healing potion. It will make Lilly all better!’
He then baked some ginger and cinnamon cookies from a recipe he found in Mum’s special recipe book. It was their family’s favourite cookies and they made them every Easter. A lovely smell wafted through the burrow as he put the cookies on a plate. He reached for a small tray on the top of the cupboard and placed the lavender flowers, the plate with cookies and the cup of his healing potion of moon milk on it.
Very carefully, without disturbing Daddy rabbit, he climbed up the stairs with the tray in his hands. He knocked on Lilly’s door with his elbow and Mum opened the door yawning. He rushed past her and put the tray down on the bedside table.
He looked at Lilly who was still fast asleep and then turned around and smiled at Mummy rabbit. “I’ve made some ginger and cinnamon cookies and a cup of Granny’s healing potion to make her feel better so we can go for the Easter egg hunt!” he said with a twinkle in his eye.
Mummy rabbit looked at Bunny with his flour covered face and turmeric stained hands and gave him a big hug. Just then, Daddy rabbit yelled from the kitchen “Gosh! Have you seen the mess in the kitchen?!”. Bunny got a bit scared hearing Daddy’s resounding voice and looked down at the floor.
Mummy rabbit smiled proudly and looked at Bunny and replied “I know… Bunny is trying to make Lilly feel better”. She pulled him in closer and gave Bunny a big kiss on his forehead.
Daddy rabbit joined them in the bedroom and everyone enjoyed the yummy ginger and cinnamon cookies. Everyone agreed that Bunny makes the best cookies ever! Lilly also drank the moon milk and was feeling much better, partly because of the lovely healing potion that Bunny made for her and partly because she had had a good night’s sleep.
Daddy rabbit took Bunny on his lap and told him something that became a very valuable lesson. He said “Bunny, I am so proud of you for taking care of your sister. We are a family and we need to make sure that we are all healthy and happy.” Bunny hugged Daddy and looked at Lilly lovingly. Lilly said “I’m feeling much better. Shall we get ready for the Easter egg hunt Bunny?”
Bunny shouted “Hurray! This is the best Easter ever!”
