Hyssop

Botanical name: Hyssopus officinalis
Common name: Hyssop
Part used: Herb

Hyssop has been used as a medicinal herb since classical antiquity & its name is believed to be of Greek origin. It is referenced in the Bible over a dozen times – most notably in verse 7 of Psalm 51 – ‘Thou shalt purge me with Hyssop, and I shall be clean’.

As with many herbs, Hyssop has a variety of actions which act synergistically to achieve its therapeutic effect. The volatile oil of Hyssop is believed to be largely responsible for its therapeutic action due to its anti-spasmodic activity. It has traditionally been used for coughs, bronchitis, chronic catarrhal conditions & to help reduce fever. It has also been used as a nervous system tonic to help calm nervous anxiety & as a gentle sedative, making it an ideal herb for children.
