  1. Typically, the biggest difference between the classifications are freeboard (Offshore/Transoceanic rafts offer more than Coastal), offshore rafts have an insulated floor, materials (weight), survival kit size, and ballasting.
  2. A typical offshore raft can be considerably more expensive than a coastal raft, and is designed to protect and sustain the occupants in rough, stormy weather and colder water for more than 24 hours. An offshore raft normally has the following features:
    1. At least two separate flotation chambers.
    2. Insulated floors (two inflatable layers or with an insulating material).
    3. An inflatable canopy covering the entire raft.
    4. Larger ballast bags suspended below the raft to stabilize it in high winds or waves.
    5. A boarding platform to make the raft easier to enter from the water.
    6. A substantial survival kit to support the rated number of occupants with food and water for more than 24 hours.
    7. An automatically deployed drogue or sea anchor.
  3. A typical coastal raft is designed to protect and sustain the occupants in inshore and warmer waters for up to 24 hours. A coastal raft has the following features:
    1. Often just one flotation chamber
    2. A single-layer uninsulated floor
    3. A partial inflatable canopy covering the raft.
    4. Fewer or smaller ballast bags.
    5. A boarding ladder made from webbing to assist entry into the raft.
