What are allergies?
Allergies are caused by allergens. An allergy can be nearly anything, from certain foods to animal dander, depending on the individual it affects. Hay fever is a reasonably frequent allergic reaction that typically occurs in the spring.
Avoiding known allergens is one of the best strategies to treat allergies, although this is not always practicable, and allergy symptoms can arise.
A clogged or runny nose, sneezing, watery, red, or itchy eyes, an itchy throat, and occasionally a rash are all allergy symptoms. Some people have all of these symptoms at the same time, while others only have one or two. Michael's Chemist has a variety of products to address allergy symptoms in the entire family.
It is important to note that individuals with severe allergies (known as anaphylaxis) should always carry an EpiPen and seek immediate medical attention if they are exposed to a triggering allergen.
Treatment by symptom:
Broad symptoms
When it comes to allergies, many people experience a variety of symptoms. Antihistamine tablets are one of the most used allergy medications. These tablets contain chemicals that prevent histamine formation (the substance the body produces when it comes into contact with an allergen). Antihistamines are the standard treatment for many allergy symptoms, such as a runny nose/nasal congestion, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, an itchy throat, or rashes.Blocked or Runny Nose
Nasal congestion is common during allergic reactions (particularly hay fever), and it can be treated with nasal decongestants like nasal sprays and washes. It is brought on by nasal discomfort and inflammation. To help clear a blocked or runny nose in just a few minutes, we recommend trying Flo Rapid Relief Flo Rapid Relief contains the active ingredient Xylometazoline Hydrochloride (1mg/mL) which acts quickly (within minutes) to help reduce nasal congestion. It also lasts for up to 10 hours so you can get on with your day or get a better nights’ sleep.
Sneezing
Sneezing is a direct result of allergens irritating the membranes that line the inside of the nose. Products like nasal sprays and washes that reduce this inflammation and wash the allergens out of the sinus cavity can help to reduce the frequency of sneezing.
For a healthier nose, try a protective carrageenan saline nasal spray called Flo Travel. It’s a gentle, moisturising nasal spray containing red seaweed extract with many benefits.
Watery, Red or Itchy Eyes
Histamine production in the body can sometimes cause watery, red or uncomfortable and itchy eyes. Eye drops can be used to treat this symptom directly. As a recommendation, try Albalon A Allergy Eye Drops. They contain triple action formula with lubricant - decongestant and antihistamine.
Itchy Throat
Histamine production may also cause irritation of the membranes lining the throat, resulting in the classic hay fever symptom of an itchy throat. Allergies can range from mild to severe. An itchy throat can indicate a milder, yet uncomfortable, allergic reaction. Besides antihistamine tablets, sore throat lozenges that coat the throat and encourage salivation many provide a soothing effect.
Rash
Rashes caused by an allergic reaction are often referred to as hives. Hives can be treated indirectly with antihistamine tablets and directly with hydro-cortisone creams (in small areas) or creams that soothe the skin. Additionally, using soap free washes that reduce the irritation of the skin when compared to regular soap and keeping cool can help soothe hives.
