Overview
Babies are prone to a number to a number of conditions and not every medication is suitable for infants and young children. That is why it is essential to understand these common ailments and be prepared to deal with them effectively.
Pain & Fever
A fever is regarded as a temperature of 38 °C or higher. Fevers are quite common in young children and are usually mild. If your child’s face feels hot to the touch and they look red or flushed, then they may have a fever. The best way to check their temperature is with a thermometer. See your doctor if your child has other signs of illness as well as a raised temperature or if you are worried.
To help relieve pain and fever, paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used. Paracetamol is suitable for infants from 1 month of age and its effect lasts for 4-6 hours. Ibuprofen is suitable for infants from 3 months of age and its effect lasts for 6-8 hours.
Teething
Teething, although a natural process, can result in discomfort and pain in babies. If it is confirmed that your baby is experiencing pain due to teething, you may opt to use paracetamol as a general pain relief or ibuprofen as an anti-inflammatory. Further to that, Seda Gel can be applied to the gums to help reduce pain.
Nappy Rash
Nappy rash occurs when a baby’s skin is covered by a wet or dirty nappy for too long. Nappy rash appears as red swollen skin that looks damp and may have some blisters or ulcers. The whole of the skin covered by a nappy may be damaged, or it may be on much smaller patches. To treat nappy rash, you can use an ointment that contains B5 to speed the healing process and create a protective barrier on the skin. For nappy rash which has fungal involvement, speak to a pharmacist.
Dry Skin
Baby skin is sensitive and can become dry due to excessive bathing or environmental factors. Soap can remove the skin’s natural oils and make it more difficult for the skin to hold moisture. Excessive heat and cold, when paired with low humidity, can also lead to dry skin. When bathing your child, opt for a soap-free wash and lotion that is pH balanced and fragrance free. If symptoms persist, see your health care professional.
