We get asked a lot about how we grow our wasabi in the UK, from loyal customers interested in how this amazing Japanese speciality arrives fresh on their doorstep following a web order, to ambitious farmers looking to establish themselves as expert growers in countries all over the world. As first in the UK and one of the first in Europe and outside of Japan, we have had a lot of experience in how to grow our own, facing the highs and lows of farming this incredible - and at times seemingly impossible - crop.
It's not all plain sailing, many of our insect friends also love chowing down on leaves, stems and roots, plus it is a delicate plant that needs "Goldilocks" conditions: just enough heat & cold, but not too much; just enough sun but not too much; just enough water, but not too much and so on.
We'd love to be able to offer farm visits and tours to one and all, but we are a small team and at the moment we don't have the time to do this properly and professionally, so as an interim, we made a video of a day in the life of a wasabi grower, showing the plants from small plugs going into the ground to mature plants being harvested 18 months later.
It's short and sweet, but we hope you like it.
