ARDS Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), also called shock lung or adult respiratory distress syndrome, results from increase permeability of the alveolocapillary membrane. Fluid accumulates in the lungs interstitium, alveolar spaces, and small airways, causing the lungs to stiffen. Serve ARDS can cause intractable and fatal hypoxemia. However, patients who recover may have little or no permanent lung damage.


What happens in ARDS

Shock, sepsis, and trauma are the most common causes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Trauma-realted factors, such as fat emboli, pulmonary contusions, and multiple blood transfusions, may increase the likeihood that microemboli (small blood clots) will develop.


What are Some Signs and Symptoms?

  • Anxiety
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Low level of oxygen in the blood (hypoxemia)
